Flirt on that Interview like it’s Your First Hot Date!

Do you want to know why you’re screwing up your first date, I mean interview?  OK, so the headline was created to catch your attention. It must have worked because you’re here. Let’s add some fun and spice to one of my favorite topics – Job Interviews.

There is one key interview preparation tool that many professionals overlook. Not only does this tool allow you to see whether or not the company really is a good fit for you; this tool also helps you to get to know about your new company even before the interview.

What is this hugely powerful overlooked tool?

- The company’s website

what’s so powerful about the company’s website? Let’s think of your interview as a first date, shall we? ; )

The company’s website is the key to their heart, only if (like in a relationships) you handle it with care. No manipulation! That will get your butt kicked, whether figuratively or literally, out the door.
OK, so ready to prepare for your 1st date? Let’s go!
I’m going to write this as if you are a man preparing for a first date with a woman who is your dream woman. OK, so here we go, your first date with your dream woman: code for dream job.

Let’s just start with this: If by browsing through your company’s dating profile (company website) you can tell in your heart that you are not a match made in heaven, then you’ll want to reconsider the 1st date. With that said, let’s get right into it.

Here are 3 things that you are going to look for on the company’s website and exactly how to use them to wow your interviewer.

What To Research: Home Page

What is the company’s image? Do you agree with their image? Does it turn you on or does it make you want to gag? It’s likely that the company will expect you to mesh with them and to some extent match up with the image they have created in some way. Do your images work together?

How to Use It:

What will you wear on the interview that will show that your image and the company’s image are complimentary? Furthermore, what attitude will you bring to the interview that will be complimentary to what the company has already created? How will you embody the characteristics that will fuel you to perform your respective role in the company with excellence unlike any that the company has seen before?

What To Research: About Us

In their About Us section how do they describe themselves? What do they like to be known for? What do they like to be referred to as?

A woman wants a man who backs up what she’s proud of. If a woman describes herself as honest she is proud of that quality and it is important for her to find a man who is also very honest. In other words, she wants to amp up the honesty in her life.

Likewise, if a company describe themselves as innovative, they want to amp up the innovation in their company.

How to Use It:

Seeing that innovation is something that the company values, you’ll want to highlight how you would like to amp up that innovation in their company. How will your unique skill set contribute to the amping up of their company’s increasingly innovative operations?

What to Research: Who they’re looking for

Knowing who your potential company is looking for will drastically increase your chances of receiving a job offer. In fact, if you’re smart, are the right fit, and you do your research before the interview; finding out who your future employer is looking for will practically guarantee that you receive a job offer.

Where do you find what they’re looking for?

  • Mission and Values
  • Letter from the CEO

These are all common places where the company often states directly who they’re looking for.

How easy is that!

Here’s an example from BASF.

How To Use It:

Now you know what to highlight on your interview. This is the perfect spot to find your What 3 words. In this case it would be 4 words. Asking yourself what 4 words do I want my interviewer to remember me by will give you clarity and allow you to make a powerful impression. You won’t be wondering what the interviewer thinks about you after the interview, you will know because you’ve intentionally set 4 words in mind and conveyed those 4 words throughout your interview.

If you go to the interview without visiting the company website, you go without doing your homework and it will show plain and simple. Studying and understanding the company through their website is an essential step in landing the job. It works for many professionals including my clients. In fact, heading to the company website has really given my clients confidence, ease and peace before, during and after the interview. Most importantly, they get the job!

Look for the 3 things above on the company website and use your knowledge of the company to impress the interviewer and land your perfect fit job.
